If you are new to crochet, you may have looked at a pattern and thought what size yarn or yarn weight are they using or this pattern calls for worsted weight and the other calls for sport weight, whats the difference? In this post were going to break down each yarn weight so you can take the guess work out of your next project.
First off when we talk about weight we are actually talking about the thickness of the yarn. This is measured WPI (wraps per inch) or WPU (wraps per unit). This can vary depending on if you use inch or centimeters.
While there is an international numbering system that goes from 0-7, there are multiple terms used to describe each weight and I’ve seen them used for different numbers, especially for lighter weight yarns. This can make things very confusing if your a beginner or if you are using yarn from say Japan or Singapore vs something you can just grab at Hobby Lobby. For example, with many yarns found in Asia they give the recommended hook size instead of just telling you which weight it is.
So with all of this in mind lets dive in to the world of yarn weights!
Size 0 or Lace Weight (Thread Crochet)

Hook Size: 1.5mm-2.0mm
This is going to be your smallest weight yarn. As you may have guessed by the name, you would typically use this yarn for making lace and other projects such as doilies, collars, etc.
Size 1 or Super Fine, Fingering, Baby Weight
Hook Size: 2.25-3.25mm
This weight can be used to make delicate items such as clothes for babies, socks, lightweight scarves, and intricate shawls.
Size 2 or Fine, Sport Weight
Hook Size: 3.00mm-3.75mm
This yarn is best for lightweight sweaters, hats, and baby clothes. Its lightness makes it suitable for garments that require a smooth, fine finish. Recently this has been one of my favorite weights to work with.
Size 3 or Light Worsted or DK Weight
Hook Size: 4.00mm-5.00mm
This versatile weight is great for light sweaters , scarves, and shawls and even some home décor projects like cushion covers. DK yarn is often used for projects requiring a good drape and structure. Also a weight I love to work with!
Size 4 or Medium Weight, Worsted, Aran Weight
Hook Size: 5.5mm-6.5mm
This is going to be your “all- purpose” yarn and one I would recommend for beginners who are just learning to crochet. The thickness of the yarn makes it easier to work with. It’s great for blankets, sweaters, hats, and scarves.
Size 5 or Bulky, Craft, Chunky Weight
Hook Size: 6.5mm-9mm
This weight is great for cozy sweaters, chunky hats, thick scarves, and warm blankets. This can make a great last minute gift!
Size 6 or Super Bulky Weight

Hook Size: 9mm-15mm
This one is great for heavy, ultra warm blankets, heavy scarves and accessories. The heavy weight makes stitches easy to see so this could also be a great starter weight.
Sizer 7 or Jumbo Weight
Hook Sizer 15mm and larger or even your hands
This size is great for arm-knitting pieces, oversized scarves, rugs and chunky throws. The large size means you can make a project in a short time.
The most important thing to keep in mind is what you are wanting to achieve with your project. Do you want something delicate or quick and bulky? Do you need something light or are you going for extra warmth?
